Jury Service
Just been summoned to do this for the first time in my life.
Am 50+ and was hoping I'd swerve it.

Any of the fine people of WHO done it and can give me any tips, either on how to get out of it or how to survive it ?
Any amusing stories to tell about doing it ?

Like West Ham recently, the defence rests.

Re: Jury Service
Have done it now.
Old Bailey no less.
Surprisingly I loved it and would do it again.

One case (it's all over so I'm allowed to talk about it ) was about an "alleged" robbery in Bromley

Re: Jury Service
Did this about 20 years ago, and one of the 3 cases I did involved an "assault" in Green Street on a Liverpool supporter.

Funniest thing of the whole case was the Liverpool supporter was brought down from merseyside to answer about 5 minutes of questions.

He'd left Liverpool at 8 that morning, got the train down, stopped in a pub at Kings Cross, then a pub at Upton Park, and in all that time had only drunk 3 pints. In fact every witness for both sides who'd been drinking had only drunk 3 pints.

Not guilty obviously. Nothing to do with loyalties, it was clearly a made up case by the police who wouldn't back down once they realised they'd made a mistake.

Called up a few years ago. Hung around all day one and the next two mornings - fortunately I lived within walking distance - sent home and told to phone in each morning, discharged early in week two.

Employer covered my wages, nightmare for anyone self-employed and earning above the measly allowance.

When I was 18 I had a good mate who was a total scatty arsed space cadet was always doing acid or snorting speed or doing bongs for breakfast the fucker only got summoned for jury service much to our amusement. Poor fucker didnt know what had hit him and almost got sent away himself for turning late/off his nut.

I wouldn't have trusted him to find his own bollocks yet he was in charge of some poor fuckers future

Re: Jury Service
Can you imagine having to do this in the days of capital punishment.

I could never sanction anyone being killed, maybe that's why they got rid?

One of the reasons they got rid, was blatantly executing innocent people

Google Timothy Evans for one of the reasons

Re: Jury Service
Assume it is the same today but was paid all travel expenses by Public Transport made a few bob driving my own car and 4/5 other jurors every day who gave me thier travel expenses! Coppers/Pennies in this day and age but at the time was very handy additional income for two months!!

Did it and loved it. Had a nasty case of assault in Greenwich. He went down and found out he'd been abused as a kid and foster homes.

I didn't hear it but some woman on the jury said as he went away that all the jury were "getting fucking done"

Still waiting.

Re: Jury Service
Definitely do it, it's your social responsibility

Watching the barristers go about there business is pure theatre and you get the chance to put some scumbags away!

Re: Jury Service
I considered trying to serve it when called up earlier tHis year.

I thought I'd be sitting on my arse watching the clock with arm loads of books. In fact, it was a most enjoyable and very enlightening experience. The real plus, was the opportunity to mix with people I normally wouldn't in general simply because my social circle tends to be my peers.

Embrace the opportunity to uphold a great democratic process and you'll enjoy it. IMO

Re: Jury Service
just seen this

i know you get paid a pittance for this but ( just in case you have a Credit card or 2 and /or any insurance policies they some times have little clauses in them which pay 30 quid a day if you are called up for jury service

Just saying like might be worth a check to earn a few extra quid !

Re: Jury Service
When you consider how difficult it must be to find enough evidence to proceed with a case, all jurors should as public spirited citizens find every defendant guilty. They would not be in court if there was any doubt. My sympathies are for victims and not criminals.

Reason for the ''all white'' jury on mine was the defendant's had kicked shit out of an Asian guy on one thier robberies.

Re: Jury Service
My mum got a gang rape case at Snaresbrook.

All black chaps and every single juror got a death threat from various places ie probably a load of blokes part of the rape who weren't caught and so it was a police ride back home for all of them every night.

She found it boring as fuck, but was happy they were all found guilty as she's a daft old racist.

She was in her 60's then.

My one got 13, and I had to be the foreman as well cos all the others were cacking themselves, although to be fair I did have a trot to my car when I left.
